Different Types of Ceiling Fans
Outdoor ceiling fans must
be constructed to withstand extreme hot and cold
temperatures, as well as humidity, dust and
dryness. Indoor fans are not designed to
withstand these elements so those fans should
never be installed outdoors. One company that
has a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on its
outdoor ceiling fans (as well as its indoor
ceiling fans) is the Hunter Company.
Some fans are “damp rated” and others are “wet
rated.” The damp rated fans are conducive to
areas with a great deal of humidity or
condensation. These fans can be used in such
locations as covered porches, gazebos and
lakeside areas. The wet rated fans can withstand
direct water contact and can be used near
swimming pools or spas, as well as any other
areas where direct water contact may occur. They
can also be used in damp areas.
Outdoor ceiling fans often require different
types of lighting fixtures and elements than
indoor fans. You obviously will not need to turn
the light on an outdoor ceiling fan on a bright
sunny day, but at night, you will often want the
light on. There are several different types of
fans that can provide you with maximum air
circulation as well as adequate lighting for use
outdoors. Most of these outdoor ceiling fans
will also eliminate annoying mosquitoes and
other flying insects.
Outdoor ceiling fans are often constructed with
galvanized tubular steel and powder-coated
painted finishes to prevent rust and corrosion.
In addition, a weather shield may also protect
the fan's components.
