Things to Know Before Buying an Outdoor Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans may look similar, but they are not all created the same. You need to consider many aspects of the ceiling fan that will best meet your needs before making a selection. Some considerations include the amount of air that is being circulated as well as how efficient the fan will move the air; the quietness (or noisiness) of the fan; if the fan will wobble; the durability of the fan's finish; the lifespan of the fan and whether the manufacturer will stand behind the warranty.

Some fans may have a nice appearance, but will move very little air. Obviously, a fan such as this would not be a good choice. Consider the blade pitch of the fan as that is a major component for air movement. Keep in mind that the greater the pitch (angle of the blade), the greater the air movement. The blade pitch must also complement the motor for this to occur. Some ceiling fan manufacturers will cut corners on materials and will not use motors that are powerful enough to sustain the correct blade pitch. If blade pitch is compromised, proper air movement will not occur because there will be too much stress on a motor which is undersized or under-powered. Some manufacturers may also utilize very thin blades in order to reduce costs, which also will result in decreased air movement.

The entire effectiveness of a ceiling fan depends upon the amount of energy it consumes, as well as the volume of air that the fan moves. Motors that are slow with low wattage utilize very little energy, and as a result move very little air, which makes them very inefficient.

If a ceiling fan is designed and manufactured poorly, it could cause a humming noise when the fan is operating. Often a humming noise is a result of the use of cheap ball bearings, which are installed to reduce costs. Another cause of a humming noise (other annoying noise) could be the result of improper dampening between the metal parts of a fan or the use of a very thin sheet metal motor or parts used to mount the system.
