Balance Outdoor Ceiling Fan: Inspect Lock
Washers
If you have already tried to tighten the
blade irons, but the wobbling still occurs, or
if it resulted in decreased wobbling, the next
step is to determine whether your fan has a full
set of matching lock washers under its blade
iron screws. It is not necessary to disassemble
the fan in order to perform this task.
To begin with, turn the fan off by its pull
chain, then unscrew one of the blade-iron
screws. It is not necessary to take out the
screw, merely back it out so that you can see if
there is a lock washer on it, and if so, notice
what that washer looks like. If that first screw
contains a lock washer, notice what it looks
like, then re-tighten the screw and go on to the
next screw. Continue this procedure until each
of the eight or ten blade-iron screws have been
inspected on your fan.
If there is no lock washer behind any of the
screws, or if a lock washer is found that is not
exactly like the others, then stop. You will
need to purchase a new set of lock washers. You
may need to purchase the lock washers from the
manufacturer, but you may be able to find them
at stores which stock a big inventory of ceiling
fans. Take out one of the screws and bring it
with you to the store. It is best if that screw
has the correct lock washer. If you are not able
to find the original equipment lock washers, ask
for eight or ten that are as similar as possible
to the one you have that are also sized to fit
the screw, and the hole in the blade iron in
which the head sits. In other words, it should
be no bigger on the outside than the head of the
screw.
