Why is your Ceiling Fan Humming?

As you are probably aware, most electrical items contain some noise; this, of course, includes ceiling fans. The noise of a ceiling fan should be a gentle whir sound of air that is circulating rather than a humming sound.

There are different characteristics of a ceiling fan that may cause it to hum, or make other irritating noises.

A humming sound on a ceiling fan is usually the consequence of bad engineering or poor manufacturing. The manufacturers may have used cheap, non-precision ball bearings to produce their ceiling fans in order to save on production costs. Some fans may not have been constructed with proper dampening elements between metal parts which could also cause a humming sound.

The humming noises could also be caused by the type of electrical control system that was installed within the fan during its production. A capacitor control system is contained in the highest quality ceiling fans; this system allows the fan to be set at different speeds such as high, medium or low. The variable fan speed controls have a solid state control system that enables the ceiling fan to operate from speed ranges of low to high. However, the solid state control is not as efficient or as durable as the capacitor electronics, nor are the two controls compatible or interchangeable. A cause of a humming or a buzzing sound could be that a solid state control was used on a capacitor ceiling fan.

It is recommended that most ceiling fans be installed with a more efficient capacitor control to prevent noises such as humming or buzzing.
